Case Study of the 1:1 Preceptorship in Clinical Education for Senior Student Nurses

Abstract
Purpose: This study was to assess the satisfaction of nursing students with preceptorship.

Method: The subjects were thirty-nine senior nursing students and their respective preceptors. Data was collected on students¡¯ satisfaction with preceptorship as measured by Lowery¡¯ Teacher Evaluation Opinion Form and analyzed with descriptive statistics as were the data on achievement of learning objectives. Content analysis was done on the open ended questions about the experience of preceptorship.

Results: The average score of satisfaction with the preceptorship was 3.62(SD .11) using a four point scale. The average score of achievement of learning objectives was 3.55(SD .16) using a four point scale. The themes from the content analysis of the responses to the open ended questions were security, increased opportunities of direct nursing care, real-time feedback, better insight, theory-practice consistency, improved self confidence and increased responsibility. Further, the preceptors reported developing of competency in clinical practice and teaching along with pride as professionals.

Conclusion: The findings from this study add to the body of literature about the preceptorship process. Students find preceptors and the preceptorship an effective method for clinical education.
